A Summer of Sports

The UEFA European Football Championship.....Wimbledon.......the Olympics.....Formula One...................
there will be sports galore this summer.
There are many novels with sporting themes, as well as non-fiction titles, so we thought we'd look at books about any kind of sport.
Try our link to The British Sports Book Awards website on the Read and Relax page to find the best non-fiction sports books of 2012.
Nick Hornby's novel, High Fidelity, became a bestseller for its view of men and their interests, including football.
The Boys Rule! series are adventure books,  many of which have a sport theme.
The Complete Book of the Olympics covers it's history and quirky facts.

I remember some novels by Peter Tinniswood which were about cricket - Down Under and Tales from the Long Room - written with his customary humour, as in the tales of Carter Brandon which formed a long running television series 'I didn't know you cared' and were also serialised on radio.

I've read The liar by Stephen Fry which had quite a bit about cricket in it and was, as I seem to remember quite an enjoyable read. Nick Hornby always manages to get some mention of Arsenal football club into his books as he is a huge fan but I think apart from Fever pitch none of his novels have anything much to do with sport at all.

Hi Lisa
Thank you for your comments - probably just as well for there to be very little about football today after the game last night?
Still, Wimbledon starts today. Does anyone remember reading Sophie Kinsella's first novel 'The Tennis Party'? Or Lionel Shriver's 'Double Fault'? In the first a tennis tournament weekend between four couples disintegrates into mayhem. 'Double Fault' explores the battle between relationships and competitiveness when two tennis pros fall in love.

It's interesting to know that, before shopping, Sophie Kinsella wrote about Tennis. Incidentally also within the Chick Lit genre there is a novel about Tour de France called Cat by Freya North, it's quite comical and those cyclists could give a diva a lesson in histrionics.

That's a surprising topic for a Chick Lit book and sounds quite intriguing. Freya North is a very popular author, so it should be a good read. It reminds me that Jilly Cooper caused a stir with her books set in the world of horse riding.
Of course, the world of horse racing was the setting of the very popular crime novels by Dick Francis too.
